Conquer primal fear: Phonological features are innate and substance-free

چکیده

Abstract We argue that the representational primes of human phonological faculty, so-called distinctive features, are innate and substance-free. Our arguments for innateness features built on traditional novel logical arguments, experimental evidence accumulating over recent decades, somewhat detailed proposals about their neurobiological reality. As symbols in brain, substance-free, is, they devoid articulatory acoustic content, or even any direct reference to such phenomena. This is consistent with our substance-free conception computation, an approach eschews functionalist notions like markedness, ease articulation, so on. also outline a neural model phonetics-phonology interface called Cognitive Phonetics, which transduces speech articulation from acoustics. These extra-grammatical transduction procedures part biological endowment, leaves no room language-specific phonetics theory externalization language. show how Phonetics can account traditionally recognized intersegmental coarticulation, as well previously unexplored intrasegmental strongly suggesting basic units production transduced features.

Conquer Fear

Conquer Fear. By John Langdon-Davies. Feature Books Ltd., London, 1948. pp. 173. 5s. This little book, by an experienced popular writer on science and on contemporary problems, will contribute something to mental hygiene. It has been read by the reviewer in as naive a frame of mind as possible to try and find the places that might jar. There are not many, despite my prejudice against the slight...

Features and the ‘primal sketch’

This review is concerned primarily with psychophysical and physiological evidence relevant to the question of the existence of spatial features or spatial primitives in human vision. The review will be almost exclusively confined to features defined in the luminance domain. The emphasis will be on the experimental and computational methods that have been used for revealing features, rather than...

Week 2 – Phonological Features

Explain why the pair illustrating the [p/p h ] distinction is more informative in a way than the pair illustrating the [p/b h ] distinction. What phonetic dimensions must be associated with the contrast? What about the English and Spanish sounds discussed earlier?

Features in Phonological Theory

Features are central in phonological theory. They come in different varieties. Using the methods of [263] we shall analyse a few conditions on phonological structures. This will elucidate the tradeoff between features on the one hand (and structure) and principles on the other. Without making any claims as to which method is superior, we shall simply outline what choices one has in describing t...

Detection of phonological features

We report work on the first component of a two-stage speech recognition architecture based on phonological features rather than phones. This paper reports experiments on three phonological feature systems: (1) the Sound Pattern of English (SPE) system which uses binary features, (2) a multi-valued (MV) feature system which uses traditional phonetic categories such as manner, place, etc., and (3...
